Ground Form Gears is a specialist subcontract gear grinding company. We finish-grind spur, helical and internal gears, splines and pinion shafts for engineering companies across the UK, from a single replacement gear to production batches, and we prove every one on inspection before it leaves.
What we do
We grind the teeth. Bring us a drawing, a sample or a worn gear and we take it from there: the right stock allowance, the grind, and the paperwork that proves it.

Ring gears and internal splines finish-ground after heat treatment, holding the tooth thickness and runout the assembly needs.

How we work
Send the drawing, or the gear itself. We check the geometry, the grade and the stock left on the flanks, and tell you if anything on the drawing will cause a problem.
A clear price and lead time, usually within two working days. Batches priced per part; breakdowns prioritised.
Your parts are booked in against the order, checked for damage and hardness where it matters, and each line is tracked from here.
Set up to the drawing, first-off measured, then the batch. Profile, lead and thickness are held to the grade you asked for.
Span or over-pin measurement on every gear, with profile and lead traces on request. Nothing leaves without the numbers.
Labelled per line with a delivery note, on our own transport locally or by carrier, with the inspection report if you want it.

About us
Ground Form Gears does one thing: the finish grinding of gear teeth. It is the last operation on a gear and the one that decides whether it runs quietly and lasts. Because it is all we do, our engineers know the job inside out, from the stock allowance a hobbed gear needs before heat treatment to the profile corrections that make a gearbox quiet.
We work for gear cutters who send us their finishing, gearbox builders who want a grade proved on paper, and maintenance engineers who need a replacement for a gear nobody has a drawing for. We treat all three the same way: measure it, grind it, prove it.

Questions we get asked
For most sizes we like 0.10 to 0.20 mm per flank after heat treatment, measured as a change in span or over pins. Too little and a distorted gear will not clean up; too much wastes grinding time and can burn the flank. Tell us the tooth count, module and helix angle and we will give you a span figure to cut to.
Yes. Send the gear, or the mating gear, and we measure it: tooth count, outside and root diameters, span over teeth, helix angle. From those we identify the module, pressure angle and profile shift and grind the replacement to match. Where two standards fit the same measurements we will say so and ask which the original was.
We grind to the DIN 3962 or ISO 1328 grade on your drawing, and quote AGMA equivalents when that is what the drawing carries. The achievable grade depends on the blank: how true it was cut and how it distorted in hardening. We will tell you at quoting stage if the stock or the datum faces are not going to support the grade asked for.
The drawing, the quantity, the grade, and how the part is located: bore, journals or centres. If the gear is one of a pair, the mating gear's details help us set the tooth thickness correctly. A purchase order number saves everyone time.
Tell us it is a breakdown when you call. Single gears with stock on them are usually ground the same or next working day, subject to the work already on the machines.
